O Come, Emanuel O come, O come, Emanuel and Ransom captive Israel that mourns in lonely exile here until the son of God appear. Rejoice, rejoice, Emanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel You know this song, of course. We sing it every year at Christmas. But did you ever notice that it's not actually a Christmas song? Israel was not in exile at the time of Jesus' birth. This is a prayer for Jesus' second coming. Sometimes people forget that Jesus did much more than simply be born, and that He has much yet to do. As we sing our Christmas carols and hymns this year, let's remember that Jesus ins't just a baby in a manger. He is our king, and the one who will in the future rule the Earth and set everything aright.
